England captain Owen Farrell has suffered becoming the first player in a World Cup to time out on a penalty.
The rule was only introduced on January 1 2023 as rugby looks to clamp down on time-wasting.
Farrell fell foul of the shot clock
And his disappointment was plain to see
Fans in the stands could not believe the error
England were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute with the score 11-17 to Samoa.
But Farrell took ridiculously long over the penalty and saw himself to become the first player to be punished at a World Cup by the new shot clock rule.
Fans in the Stade Pierre Mauroy were left bemused by the incident.
And fans on Twitter took a fair deal of schadenfreude in Farrell’s mistake.
One fan wrote: “It might not actually get better than sitting in a stadium full of Irish and Scottish people while Owen Farrell, in the middle of losing to Samoa, let’s the shot-clock run out on a penalty.”
Another attached a picture of laughing fan in the stands with the caption: “Perfect reaction to Owen Farrell’s kick.”
A third was frustrated with Farrell from an England fan’s perspective and wrote: “The arrogance of Owen Farrell is draining the life out of this England team.”
A fourth added: “Seeing Owen Farrell encountering any form of adversity” alongside a picture of Kylian Mbappe laughing hysterically.
