FORMER Liverpool winger Albert Riera is set to be named as the new manager of Bordeaux.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, a deal has been agreed in principle.

A contract is now being prepared for the Spaniard.

Riera is set to leave Slovenian side NK Celje, who he joined in July, to join Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Prior to joining Celje he spent one season with NK Olimpija Ljubljana and two years as Galatasaray‘s assistant manager.

The former winger pursued a career in coaching after hanging up his boots in 2016.

He kicked off his career with Mallorca before moving to Bordeaux in 2003.

Riera then joined Espanyol in 2005 and was loaned to Manchester City the following year.

In 2008 he joined Liverpool and spent two years at Anfield, scoring five goals and providing nine assists in 56 appearances.

However, his time at the club was cut short after he was suspended by then-manager Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard made comments to the Spanish press regarding his first team opportunities and was subsequently exiled and transfer listed.

Riera also played for Olympiacos, Galatasaray, Watford, Udinese, Zavrc and Koper.

On top of his club career, the 41-year-old made 16 appearances for Spain.
