WATER bosses face a ban on big bonuses if they fail to clean up their filth under Labour plans.

The party will give regulator Ofwat powers to stop the cash if their firms pump high levels of raw sewage into rivers and lakes.

Under the proposals, six out of nine water chiefs’ bonuses last year would have been blocked due to pollution levels.

Labour research shows 22 water bosses paid themselves £24.8million in 2021/22.

This included £14.7 in bonus payments, benefits and incentives for 2021-22.

Shadow Environment Secretary Steve Reed said regulatory rules for the industry were “broken”.

He said: “The water industry and its regulatory framework are broken after 13 years of Tory government – with stinking, toxic sewage lapping up on our rivers, lakes, and seas.

“It is shocking that during a cost-of-living crisis, consumers are now being expected to pay the price, whilst CEOs are pocketing millions in bonuses.”
