BABY killer Lucy Letby was handed more than £1.5million in Legal Aid — and the bill will rise.

The nurse was allowed to spend £777,527.83 on barristers and £727,614.59 on solicitors, The Legal Aid Agency revealed.

Responding to a Freedom of Information request, The Legal Aid Agency said: “The most up to date figure for the total quantity of Legal Aid given to the representatives of Lucy Letby is £1,505,142.42.

“However, given how recently the trial has concluded the LAA has not yet made final payments in this case.”

Vile Letby, 33, pleaded not guilty to seven murders plus attempted murders and forced victims’ families through a harrowing 10-month trial despite overwhelming evidence.

It is yet to make final payments for her trial, so the bill will climb, it said in response to a Freedom of Information request.

Letby, of Hereford, is also likely to get Legal Aid for her retrial for trying to kill a baby girl, sending the cost to the taxpayer soaring further.

Letby was convicted of seven murders and seven attempted killings and will never leave jail.

Her ten-month trial cost the Crown Prosecution Service £2.5million.

Tory MP Pauline Latham called the spend “staggering” and said reform of the Legal Aid system “should probably be looked at again”.

She said: “This is a staggering amount of money to spend on someone like her.

“It just goes to show how little compassion Lucy Letby has that she would deny these crimes and put the families through the ordeal of a trial.

“There have been attempts to reform the Legal Aid system before, which should probably be looked at again.”

Letby became only the fourth woman to receive a whole-life order in Britain – after serial killers Rose West, Joanna Dennehy and Moors murderer Myra Hindley.
