SIR Keir Starmer made a direct appeal to Tory voters yesterday — calling on them to switch sides at the election.

The Labour leader said the past 13 years had been an era of “chaos and crisis” and many Conservative voters despaired as the party descended “into the murky waters of populism and conspiracy”.

Sir Keir Starmer made a direct appeal to Tory voters calling on them to switch sides at the electionRex

He added: “If you feel our children need a party that fights for our union, our environment, the rule of law, family life, the careful bond between this generation and the next — then let me tell you, Britain already has one.

“And you can join it. It’s this Labour party.”

Sir Keir also said winning seats in Scotland “can lead the way” to Labour getting a Commons majority.

Party insiders are targeting around two dozen seats north of the border.

Last night ex-Cabinet minister Lord Peter Mandelson told Times Radio he hasn’t met a Tory in the past six months who disagrees that they will lose.

He said: “They’ve basically given up.

“They’re throwing in the towel and they’re busy fighting among themselves over who will succeed Rishi Sunak.”
