England vs Australia tips

Yes, this is England. And yes, they are justifiably favourites to win this fixture against FIFA’s 27th-ranked opponents on home soil – but it’s unlikely to be a masterclass.

Manager Gareth Southgate wants to use this contest as an opportunity to “learn some different things” about his squad ahead of Tuesday’s important clash with Italy.

That could mean that we’ll see the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Ollie Watkins, Eddie Nketiah and Levi Colwill in the starting XI. And a new-look side could take a while to gel.

The Aussies are expected to bring their strongest side from the off, and very rarely lose by a two-goal margin. In fact it’s only happened once since 2018.

Australia appear to have a bit if a discipline problem at the back. The Aussies have conceded five penalties in their last 16 matches in all competitions – and three of those came in their last three outings.

England, meanwhile, have been awarded FOUR in their last six matches.

The ACCA

Not a huge amount to choose from in Leagues One and Two this weekend because of those pesky international fixtures – but we’ve plucked out a tasty looking treble nonetheless.

We’ll kick things off with the most in-form side in League Two, Stockport. Dave Challinor’s side have recovered from a rocky start by winning their last seven on the spin in all competitions.

They’ve taken a maximum 18 points from their last six league matches, scoring 15 goals and conceded just three. They have found memories of this fixture having won two of the last three, and they should prevail against a Harrogate side with the second-worst home record in the division.

We’re pairing Stockport with… wait for it… Cambridge United.

Cambridge don’t immediately jump off the page as the safest bet, but there’s a few good reasons to think they’ll claim maximum points.

The biggest of those is Shrewsbury’s terrible away record. They’ve taken just three points on the road from a possible 15 – scoring once in five outings on their travels. Shrewsbury have managed five league goals all season.

The U’s, meanwhile, have scored 63.64% of their league goals on home turf, and have taken 10 of their 14 points at the Abbey Stadium.

There’s never a dull day when Grimsby are about lately.

They’ve involved in some goalfests this season with all of their last six seeing over 2.5 goals and five of those with both teams scoring.

Their last five games have seen a combined 18 goals scored, and it’s a similar story for Saturday’s opponents Accrington – whose last four results read 5-3, 2-1, 1-1 and 1-3.

The Banker

I’m very enthusiastic about Slovenia’s chances this weekend. Matjaz Kek’s side are flying high in Group H having taken 13 points from a possible 18 after six matches.

They’ve lost just one of their last 12 in all competitions – which included solid draws against Denmark and Sweden, and wins over Norway and Romania.

Their one defeat did come against Finland in Helsinki, but they bossed the statistics in possession, xG and goal attempts. It was just ‘one of those nights’.

They are spearheaded by Europe’s next great talent in Benjamin Sesko, who’s banged in five in ten matches for RB Leipzig this season, and has two in qualifying already.

The Longshot

You probably weren’t expecting this, but it’s a longshot for a reason. We’ve selected Latvia to score 2+ goals against Turkey on Sunday at a rather generous 10/1.

It’s been a disastrous period for visiting Latvia, who’ve lost all five of their European qualification matches. Their manager Dainis Kazakevics is on the brink with a full review of his performance to take place after qualifying.

But one thing in their favour, is a pretty decent record against Turkey. The pair have met eight times in all competitions with Turkey winning just two of those with five draws and a win for Latvia back in 2003.

You wouldn’t necessarily describe Latvia as ‘free-scoring’ but they’ve only blanked ONCE against Turkey. They have scored 2+ goals on four occasions in this fixture and in two of their last three contests – including the reverse clash in May.
