Saturday Newmarket Placepot picks

LEG 1: Ancient Wisdom, Arabic Legend

ANCIENT WISDOM cost £2m and was third in a cracking Listed contest at Ascot when last seen. The winner of that went on to take Group 1 honours and Charlie Appleby has won the past three runnings of this.

ARABIC LEGEND was unlucky to finish only second after traffic problems in a Salisbury Listed race latest. There’s a lot more to come.

LEG 2: City Of Troy

CITY OF TROY looked a superstar when winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes on the July course here last time. He had almost seven lengths in hand in tacky ground and should step up again on just his third run to give Aidan O’Brien his eighth win in this race.

LEG 3: Vino Victrix, Pied Piper, Jesse Evans

VINO VICTRIX can go one better than last year’s second from a 2lb lower mark. Trainer Hughie Morrison looks to have laid him out for this and he warmed up with a solid fourth at Goodwood last time.

Top hurdler PIED PIPER was given a quiet run at Killarney last time and has clearly been aimed at this. Ryan Moore is a good booking and his mark of 96 could be lenient.

JESSE EVANS was a good fourth in the Irish version of this race and will relish some cut in the ground.

LEG 4: Arabian Crown, Gasper De Lemos

ARABIAN CROWN stormed away from his rivals to land a Salisbury Listed race by more than two lengths last time. That was over a mile and this longer trip can only bring improvement. He’s won on good and soft ground and this is another race where Charlie Appleby boasts a good record.

GASPER DE LEMOS was only getting started when scoring in the mud over 7f at The Curragh. He’ll improve for this stiffer test too.

LEG 5: Knight, Raadobarg

KNIGHT can land his first win of the season after two excellent seconds. He hit the post in a Goodwood Group 2 before matching that form when pipped by Chindit at Sandown. This trip and ground suit and he should be good enough.

RAADOBARG was a place behind the tip last time and the booking of Ryan Moore takes the eye.

LEG 6: City House, Action Plan

CITY HOUSE has had just three runs and went close at Wolverhampton last time. He’ll be happier upped in distance here.

ACTION PLAN clocked a personal best when a good second at Carlisle latest. The first-time visor could help too.
