Marital bliss
There is very little known about Iqbal’s wife, who was granted a restraining order against Anisah after her crimes came to light.
However, it is known that she married her husband in 2013 who was already a high-flying lawyer at the time.
Iqbal earned his bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Warwick in 2005, before going on to pass the Bar Vocational Course at BPP Law School in 2007.
He specializes in commercial law, which he studied in 2017 at the University of Birmingham.
Unbeknownst to his wife, he had received a message from Ahmed on LinkedIn which asked him to connect with her on the social media platform.
Ahmed had also sent him an email filled with probing questions, which Iqbal described as “haughty”.
Three years after her first message, Iqbal began an affair with Ahmed who claimed to be a young lawyer from Oxford.
When Ahmed discovered that Iqbal was married, he said that she became enraged and contacted his wife about the affair.
Ahmed’s scheme escalates
Ahmed’s fury at the revelation didn’t stop there though.
She sent threatening emails to herself which she purported were from Iqbal and said that the barrister was threatening to release intimate pictures of herself online.
Then, the police launched an investigation into Ahmed prompting her to take the scheme further.
She falsely accused him of rape and, soon after, he was arrested in his chambers in 2015.
Ahmed then recruited an ex-boyfriend to stage a fake kidnapping and even stabbed herself in the thigh, before calling an ambulance.
On the way to the hospital, she said Iqbal’s name so that he would be linked to the crime.
Eventually, her lies fell apart under scrutiny and she was handed a life sentence for her crimes.
Iqbal and his wife were able to reconcile after a painful period of separation.

The Real Fatal Attraction
Anisah’s terrifying scheme has been compared to the plot of the 1987 film Fatal Attraction, which saw Glenn Close’s character Alex Forrest stalk Michael Douglas’ Dan Gallagher.
The film became one of the most iconic movies of the decade and included an infamous scene where Alex boiled Dan’s rabbit in a pot on the stove.
An ITV series named The Real Fatal Attraction, which dives into Ahmed’s crimes, will air on November 13, 2024.
Fans can rewatch the series after it airs live through ITV’s streaming service ITVX.
