The group of 20 kids and three staff members were walking across a bridge over the canal when the “out of control” beast “latched onto” one of the youngsters.

Witnesses recalled the chaos as they watched the hound run circles around the children before the teachers were forced to try and drag the XL Bully off of one girl.

Conor Bennett, 19, told Manchester Evening News: “It was chasing kids around and they were pressed against the fence and it was making its way up and down the line of kids.

“The teachers were obviously freaking out and didn’t know what to do. They stood between the kids and the dog.

“But there a few who were frozen and it just turned on this girl. It latched onto her and then it was literally on top of her.”

Cops are now trying to trace the aggressive animal and its owners after they fled the scene.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers attended reports of a dog out of control on The Quays shortly before 11am yesterday (Thursday, October 12).

“A child is thought to have sustained a bite to the finger causing no injury.

“Searches remain ongoing for the dog and its owners, who had left the area, and officers provided reassurance to those concerned, who were understandably shaken from the incident.”

It comes after a mum and her daughter were rushed to hospital after being savaged by the terrifying same breed of dog on Thursday.

The horror unfolded at a home in Baddeley Green, Staffordshire, at around 11:40am yesterday.

And another was mauled by two XL Bully dogs for seven minutes during a terrifying attack.
