Videos of the fire hit social media just after 5am, showing the enormous black plumes surrounding nearby houses.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has since confirmed it broke out at an industrial recycling plant.

They said: “We’re currently dealing with a large fire at a waste recycling site on Wallace Way, Hitchin.

“We have had to close the junction of Cadwell Lane, Wilbury Way and Woolgrove Road to set up a high-volume pump.

“Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident.”

Trains from London to Hitchin appear to only be minorly delayed at the moment.
