Horror as car plunges into river with driver still inside – with frantic rescue attempt launched

A DESPERATE rescue attempt is underway after a car plunged into a river with its driver still inside.

The motorist was the only person in the vehicle, but is thought to be seriously injured.

Several emergency services, including police, the coastguard and fire crews, are on the scene in Dartmouth, Devon.

The motor went into the water this morning, with the alarm raised at 8.40am.

It took the plunge opposite the local Lifeboat Centre.

The south Embankment has been closed off and the public are being asked to avoid the area.

The closures are set to remain throughout the day.

One local told Devon Live: “There are about 15 emergency cars/ vans/ fire brigade, but no ambulance activity.”

Photos from the scene show the road closures still in place, while lifeboat crews and divers frantically search the water.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene on the south Embankment, Dartmouth, following reports of a car in the water.

“One person, who was the sole occupant, is believed to be seriously injured.

“Next of Kin are not known and are being sought.

“Please be mindful of this if at the scene and avoid publishing identifiable factors of vehicle.”
