A HORROR blaze has sparked a mass evacuation with more than 100 firefighters called to tackle the inferno.
Gwent Police and 14 fire crews were called to the scene on Frogmore Street in Abergavenny, Wales, at around 8.30pm last night.
The affected building, at the rear of the Magic Cottage charity shop, remained ablaze on Monday morning but no injuries were reported.
A number of nearby residents were evacuated, with Abergavenny Leisure Centre opened up to accommodate those affected and some still unable to return to their homes.
Cops urged residents to ensure all windows and doors were closed due to the smoke.
Firefighters then used four water bowsers, two aerial ladder platforms, and a high volume pump (HVP) to tackle the flames.
A cordon covering Frogmore Street, Regent Street, Princes Street and Baker Street is expected to remain in place for some time, said the force.
Richard John, a Conservative councillor for Mitchel Troy and Trellech ward, described the fire as “horrendous” and “heartbreaking” as he thanked emergency services on X, formerly Twitter.
Meanwhile, Monmouthshire County Councillor & Abergavenny Town Councillor for Grofield Laura Ward posted: “Absolutely devastating fire in #Abergavenny town centre tonight.
“Fire service and other emergency services still on site, working hard to get everything under control and make sure that residents are safe.
“Very grateful for their action! Please contact me if you think I might be.”
