Locals have shared shocking images on social media which show cars and homes on the Kirkholt estate partially submerged.
Engineers are reportedly on the scene, with nearby residents warned they may experience reduced water pressure.
Around 12 houses have had their gardens and ground floors flooded following the water main burst.
Fortunately, the water has drained away, but Holy Family Roman Catholic School, St Mary’s Primary School, and Sandbrook Community Primary School remain closed due to the lack of water supply.
Shani Walker, a Rochdale resident, told the BBC she saw the chaos unfolding from her window.
She said that her hallway and her living room were flooded.
The Rochdale local revealed that water mains have been a “reoccurring problem” in the area.
Shani’s neighbour, Ms Brooks, added that similar floods had happened numerous times in the past.
Ms Brooks’ carpets, living room, and entire garden were damaged by the burst water main.
She told the BBC: “Burst pipes – that’s all they say – well they need to replace the pipes don’t they.”
A spokesman for United Utilities spokesperson said: “Engineers are currently at Gerrard Street in Rochdale fixing a burst water pipe.
“We have sent our water-on-wheels tankers to the area and brought in water from another part of the network to help keep customers’ taps flowing.
“Some may notice they have low pressure or no water whilst the repairs are being carried out. We’d like to apologise to those customers impacted.”
