Stairways had been bricked up to make it look like there was no lower level.

But when cops checked further they found hundreds of plants thought to have a street value of up to £9million.

The raid took place in Bradford on Monday but so many plants were found that the stench of cannabis could still be smelt on the street outside three days later.

A source said: “The smell was overpowering.

“Anyone walking past could smell it.

“There was no mistaking what it was.”

Six men aged between 22 and 63 were charged with the production of a Class B drug and have appeared before magistrates.

They are next due to appear at Bradford crown court in January.

West Yorkshire Police said: “Enquiries remain ongoing after officers uncovered the cannabis factory in the basement of a building on Nelson Street, Bradford, on November 25.”
