Speculation has been rife over the next step of his career, with previous reports linking him with a move back to Spain.

He was even spotted back in Manchester doing some training.

However, while his footballing career is at a standstill, De Gea has continued to pursue matters away from the pitch.

De Gea, 32, founded his own eSports team called Rebels Gaming in 2021.

A year later ex-Man Utd team-mate Juan Mata and current club captain Bruno Fernandes were added to the fold as shareholders.

And in a recent Instagram story post, De Gea showed off the striking new kit his eSports team have released.

Dubbed “The Red Spike”, the kit features a black base with a cracked red pattern running across it and white collar.

The kit is available to buy for £47.65 (€54.90).

Rebels Gaming has over 28,000 followers on Instagram and features in a number of eSports tournaments on games including League of Legends, Rainbow Six Seige and Valorant.

The top award for winning the main event for the biggest of these – League of Legends – is estimated to be £1.8m.

A statement on the team’s website from De Gea says: “The launch of Rebels Gaming within eSports is another dream come true.

“It is a project that aims to instill to the new generations of young people the main values that have accompanied me since my beginnings in professional football, within a framework of innovation and unparalleled technological development.

“The digital age and the latest technologies create a new playing field where to develop new abilities and new dreams. Let’s take advantage of this great opportunity and build a better society.”

The growth of eSports has not gone unnoticed by those with deep pockets either.

Saudi Arabia recently launched a new Gamers8 eSports festival that featured a record-breaking prize pool worth £37m.

According to eSports Insider, the tournament distributed around £4m in prize money to eSports organisations that placed well across multiple titles at the festival.

Games in which Rebels Gaming compete are included, with the additions of other titles such as Dota 2, Rocket League and Fortnite.

Last week British eSports also signed a collaborative deal with the Gulf States’ own federation.
