Reddy had a crowd of over 83,000 fans watching on at MCG as he fought off a nervy ending in the 90s to break the 100 mark.
The India all-rounder saw Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah lose their spots at the crease as he, and the crowd, began to worry that he would be stuck on 99.
But Mohammmed Siraj ensured that Reddy wouldn’t be left heartbreakingly close to a century when he blocked Pat Cummins‘ last bowl.
Reddy then put together two singles and a four to elicit a raucous cheer from the crowd inside MCG.
But the one fan who was the most excited was clearly his dad.
Reddy Sr was seen overwhelmed with emotion from the stands as he celebrated with those around him and fought back the tears of pride.
Speaking to the media after his son’s incredible achievement, Mutyala Reddy said: “For our family, it’s a special day and we cannot forget this day in our life.
“He [Nitish] has been performing well since the age group of 14-15 and now in international cricket, it’s a very special feeling.

“I was very tense. Only the last wicket was remaining. Thankfully Siraj managed to survive”
Indian cricket fans were just as chuffed for Reddy, taking to social media to congratulate the Sunrisers Hyderabad star.
One fan wrote: “Unbelievable moment for the youngster! A maiden Test century at the MCG is the stuff of dreams. What a way to announce yourself on the big stage!”
While another added: “Take a bow Nitish Kumar Reddy”.
And a third posted: “Incredible achievement! a moment to remember”.
Reddy was also the recipient of a standing ovation from his India teammates and the coaching staff for the Men in Blue.
