The talented musician was found dead after his parents broke down the door at their home in Braunton, North Devon.
An inquest into Dylan’s death was told the “popular” teen had been caught vaping at school a week before his death.
His parents had also found him using a smoking replacement device the day before he died.
Dylan had been grounded as a result so could not go out with his friends that weekend or have a sleepover.
Exeter Coroner’s Court was told Dylan was “free spirit” who enjoyed snowboarding, surfing and skiing holidays.
His parents Donald and Kathy also said he could be “impulsive, oppositional and explorative going over the edge”.
They told the inquest how he would do silly things such as walking on hot coals to see what it was like.
As he got older, Dylan pushed the boundaries more which led to a dip in his schoolwork.
His parents said the teen had acted impulsively when he died and did not understand the consequences of what he was doing.
They added: “What he did was impulsive, more in anger and rage because he would not go out that evening. He kicked back in the most extreme way.”
Senior Devon coroner Philip Spinney said Dylan was a “charismatic, funny, kind, respectful boy who was independent and impulsive and pushed the limits without considering the consequences of his actions”.
He ruled out a conclusion of suicide and instead recorded a narrative verdict.
