People can be heard screaming in terror as smoke filled the underground tunnel station after the accident.

Another video appears to show the two trams along the platform, with both their front and rear ends smashed up.

A large rescue operation is now underway after initial reports claimed at least 30 people have been injured.

The horror crash is thought to have occurred after one of the trams accidentally switched tracks before hitting a second tram that was stopped at the station.

One of the trams is reported to have derailed after the accident.

An investigation into the accident is said to be underway, French outlet Actu 17 reports.

Cops confirmed that tram traffic through the main station has been interrupted “following a tram accident”.

Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service said on X: “Tram accident at the Gare Centrale stop at Strasbourg. Numerous resources were mobilised.

“Avoid the areas of Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson and facilitate access for emergency services.”

Pierre Jakubowicz, a municipal councillor in Strasbourg, posted: “Major tram collision at Strasbourg station.

Support and recognition for the emergency services mobilised and all my thoughts for the injured.”

Strasbourg-ville is the main railway station in the city of Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, France.
