It’s understood cops believe the terrifying noises could be connected to missing twins Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both 32.

But officers don’t think anyone is involved in their disappearance and are not treating it as suspicious.

One resident said: “It was pretty scary stuff.

“The path around the river is pitch black and no one in their right mind would go near it after dark.

“A woman screaming out in the darkness is going to raise some red flags.

“It’s a sound that no one would ever forget, or be able to ignore. It makes sense that it’s linked to the missing sisters.”

Eliza and Henrietta, originally from Hungary, are thought to have left their home in the city centre just to head to the River Dee.

No one has been able to find any explanation as to why they went to the unlit spot in the Torry area as temperatures plunged below zero.

The steep unpaved path was covered in ice at that time and hard to tackle even in daylight.

It’s understood the pair were captured on CCTV heading towards the water before they vanished from view. They never re-appeared on the camera footage.

Specialist police teams launched a massive land, sea and air search to try and find the pair.

SISTERS SEEMED ‘FINE’

BY SCOTTISH SUN REPORTERS

THE family of two missing sisters revealed that the pair seemed “fine” just days before their mystery disappearance.

Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, 32, vanished from Aberdeen city centre three days ago.

Their brother Jozsef told the BBC that the girls spoke to their mother on Saturday for 40 minutes.

They added that nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

The sisters are said to be part of a close-knit family who do not understand what might have happened.

Eliza and Henrietta are from a set of triplets their sister Edit Huszti who said she spoke to her siblings over a video call on New Year’s Eve where they appeared to be cheerful.

A resident said: “There’s really no other route they could have taken to get out of there.

“Was one of them screaming out for help because they’d fallen in? And did her sister go to help and then get into trouble herself.

“We might never know what happened to them. It is such a tragedy.”

Fears are growing for the twin sisters who are originally from Hungary

It’s understood the alarm was raised by their landlord who got worried when they didn’t come home and then didn’t show up for work.

Henrietta worked in a coffee shop while Eliza was a cleaner at a hotel.

Officers quizzed their colleagues hours after they were reported missing.

Search crews have been trawling the ice-covered river for days, and returned yesterday.

Dog teams have also been involved, along with helicopter crews.

The girls are two of a set of triplets, along with sister Edit. She said they were fine the last time they spoke to family back in Hungary days before they disappeared.

Their brother Jozsef asked people not to spread “fake news” about his sisters.

Chief Inspector Darren Bruce said: “We are working tirelessly to find them and have dedicated significant resources. We are seriously concerned about them.”
