Amesbury, 55, was pictured arriving at Chester Magistrates’ Court today charged with section 39 assault.

The MP was suspended from the Labour Party after footage emerged of him allegedly punching the constituent.

Hours earlier, he had posed for photos with the local police commissioner.

The MP said he was “listening to residents’ concerns and ideas for policing and community safety”.

He and the constituent are believed to have clashed over the temporary closure of a local bridge and winter fuel allowance cuts.

Amesbury, who now sits in Parliament as an Independent, released a statement after he was charged.

He said: “I have today been summonsed to court to face a charge of common assault following an incident in Frodsham last month, which was deeply regrettable.

“I am continuing to cooperate with police and given this is an ongoing case I cannot comment further.”

A spokesman for Cheshire Police added: “Mike Amesbury MP, of Frodsham, Cheshire, has been summonsed to court to face the charge of section 39 assault.

“The 55-year-old is set to appear in magistrates’ court at a later date.

“The charge relates to reports of an assault on a 45-year-old man on Main Street, Frodsham, which was reported to police at 2.48am on Saturday 26 October.”
