Staff rushed to put out the flames

The Hurricanes were batting away at 47/0 four overs into their 20-over innings when the game was halted.

The fire appeared to break out from the DJ booth near the scoreboard.

Play was stopped for several minutes as staff tried to put the blaze out.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident

Former Australia star Brad Haddin was left in shock at the incident as he spoke on commentary.

He said: “Oh no this could get serious.

“It is just halting proceedings.

“I think the umpires have been made aware of what is happening out there, so they just want to make sure nothing gets out of control.

“Play delayed due to fire, I never thought I would see that.”

Fox cricket reporter Eloise Sohier revealed that people had been evacuated from near the fire.

She added: “I think I would be standing on the boundary reporting an electrical fire,” Eloise Sohier said.

“There still is a bit of smoke around the scoreboard. They have evacuated the chairs around it perhaps trying to move them to somewhere else in the Stadium.

“But it is a sellout here at The Gabba this evening, so where they are going to get placed, who knows.

“Obviously the safety of everyone is of most importance.

“It looks like it has been put out. There is a number of fire extinguishers working on the fire, and at this stage, the smoke is dissipating.

“I think fans are keen to get on with the game, but obviously safety first here at The Gabba.”

Play was able to resume, and the Hurricanes continued with their innings as they chased the Heat’s 201/6.

They reached the total with the last ball of their 20 overs to win the match.

Caleb Jewell was the pick of the batters with an impressive 76 runs off just 49 balls.
