PGA Tour rookie William Mouw won’t want to see the 18-foot bunker at the Pete Dye Stadium Course in a hurry.
The 24-year-old, who appeared in only his third PGA Tour event, carded an octuple bogey in the second round of The Amex.
William Mouw couldn’t believe his luck in the second round of The Amex
Mouw’s astonishing shot map highlights his struggles in the 18-foot bunker
Initially, things looked good for Mouw who came to the par-five 16th at a credible six-under-par.
However, he ended up carding 13 after having to make THREE separate visits to the infamous bunker that has seen many fail.
In the end, he finished tied in 151st position and endured a shocking meltdown that left fans and commentators stunned.
Mouw also missed out on a pay day, which also left him seeing red.
The United States pro was going well after the tee – but he made a huge mistake when he pulled his second shot too far to the left, when going for the green.
With his ball some 18 feet below the putting surface, the golfer’s first go was successful. However, he hit the ball with too much power and flew the green into another hazard.
It landed on a downslope, and back into the 18-foot drop, before he hit his fourth shot back where the third came from.
Mouw then took three more attempts to get his ball over the lip. And when he did, he missed the green long once again.
For his eighth shot, it appeared he had managed to escape with a bump and run.
But the watching crowd gasped as the ball picked up speed and fell back into the 18-foot bunker for a third time.
Finally, Mouw played away from the pin, which helped him get out on his first attempt.
That left a long routine chip from the fairway.
But, his tenth shot ended up being a disaster as his ball raced through past the back of the green.
This prompted a PGA Tour commentator to shout:”What are you doing!?”
Mouw’s 11th shot got him on the green – but he still needed two putts to end his misery.
It’s one of the worst scores on a single hole in PGA Tour history.
Although, it’s not the biggest. That award goes to Tommy Armour, who hit ten balls out of bounds on his way to a legendary ‘Archaeopteryx’ – which means 15 or more over-par.
It took Armour 23 shots on the 17th hole at the 1927 Shawnee Open.
