The fatal smash took place yesterday afternoon as the region was battered by powerful winds and heavy rain.

Emergency teams rushed to the rural road after the alarm was raised shortly after 5pm.

But John could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Today, John’s heartbroken family was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy at their home in Arbroath, Angus.

The painter and decorator’s son said: “We don’t want to speak about details just now. It’s just a devastating tragedy.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.05pm on Thursday, 19 October, 2023, police received a report of a one-vehicle crash in which a tree struck a van on the B9127 at Whigstreet near Forfar.

“Emergency services attended, however, the 56-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Next of kin have been informed and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal. The road remains closed.”

It comes just a day after the body of a 57-year-old woman was recovered from the Water of Lee in Glen Esk, Angus.

A Met Office red weather warning for rain is in place across Angus and southern Aberdeenshire until noon today.

The rare alert has been extended from noon today until midnight tomorrow.

Scots have been urged not to travel unless necessary as Storm Babet batters the north-east with heavy rain and powerful winds.

Locals have also been told to evacuate their homes as soon as possible.

Emergency rest centres have been set up to house residents of around 370 properties in Angus which are being evacuated.
