Butler was visibly emotional as he announced his resignation
Saturday’s match with South Africa will be the 34-year-old’s final match as skipper of the ODI side.
An emotional Buttler said on Friday: “Just to let you know, I’m going to stand down as England captain.
“It’s the right decision for me, it’s the right decision for the team.
“And hopefully, somebody else can come in and work closely alongside Baz to take the team to where it needs to be.”
Buttler replaced Eoin Morgan as ODI skipper in 2022, although his tenure has been far from successful.
England suffered a whopping 22 defeats in 34 ODIs under his watch, which he knew could come to an end if things didn’t go well in the tournament.
He said: “I think it was quite clear that this tournament was going to be important, results wise, for my captaincy.
“And two losses and being out of a tournament with a bit of a hangover from some tournaments before.
“I think I just reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame. I’m sad about that.
“And obviously, with Brendan coming in only recently, I was really excited to work closely alongside him and hope for a very quick turnaround and to take the team forward.
“But it’s not quite worked out that way.
“So it just feels like it’s the right time for me and also for the team to have a change.”
Buttler revealed he was considering his position after Wednesday’s agonising eight-run defeat to Afghanistan.
When asked if he was weighing up his role, he replied: “Yep.
“Obviously the results aren’t where they need to be.
“We need to consider all possibilities and get England cricket back to where it needs to be.
“I’ve got to work out personally, am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?
“I’m not going to make any emotional decisions right here, right now.
“The guys at the top – they’re in charge and they will have their own views as well.”
