Trigg had a long history of violence

Who is Robert Trigg?

Robert Trigg is from Worthing, West Sussex, also home to his future victims Caroline Devlin and Susan Nicholson.

He was known for his history of violence in relationships, which got so bad that Trigg even phoned the police about his own behaviour.

Worried that he might kill his ex-partner Susan Holland, he phoned the police and said: “You need to arrest me.”

He was jailed for 12 weeks in 2016, after he threatened and attacked his ex-girlfriend Caroline Yardwood at the homeless charity shop where she worked.

Trigg’s relationship with Caroline Devlin

Trigg met Caroline, a Scottish woman, in 2003 but their relationship became volatile shortly after they started dating.

Caroline reportedly told a friend that she was worried that she wouldn’t “be here for my 40th”.

As their relationship grew more violent, she begged her friend Bridget Benger to look after her children if anything happened to her.

Sadly, Caroline’s body was discovered by her then-ten-year old daughter on Mother’s Day in 2006.

It was originally ruled that Caroline had passed away from an aneurysm.

Murdering Susan Nicholson

Trigg began dating Susan Nicholson in November 2010, after meeting her that summer at an alcohol rehabilitation course.

Susan Nicholson’s parents campaigned for her case to be reopened

Their relationship became violent too, and Trigg was cautioned by the police after punching his partner in the face in March 2011.

However, things took a turn for the worse in April 2011 when Trigg made a chilling phone call to his neighbour Hannah Cooper.

He said: “It’s Sue, I think she’s dead”.

After making the call, he left the house to buy cigarettes while Hannah phoned the police.

Susan’s parents were convinced that Trigg was behind their daughter’s sudden death, which he insisted had taken place in her sleep.

Trigg faces justice

Trigg would later claim that Susan had died accidentally, after he rolled onto her in his sleep.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC told jurors at Lewes Crown Court: “Both women appeared to have died in their sleep.

“In each case the relationship with the defendant is marked by violence.

“He has a history of behaviour that shows him in a possessive, controlling and jealous way.”

On July 5, 2017, he was convicted of the manslaughter of Caroline Devlin and the murder of Susan Nicholson.

He received a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison.

As he was taken away, he shouted: “Isaiah 50, verse 11. They should be here, not me.”

Isaiah 50, verse 11 reads: “Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks – walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled.

“This shall ye have of mine hand, ye shall lie down in sorrow.”

After the sentencing, Judge Justice Ingrid Simler praised Susan’s family for “doggedly” pursuing the case.

Susan’s parents had campaigned for five years to get police to reopen the case.

The judge said: “Mr and Mrs Skelton, her parents, have fought doggedly and continuously since their daughter’s death for the police to re-investigate her death, classified as non-suspicious and accidental at the time.”

A Killer Makes a Call

Trigg’s horrifying crime spree will be explored in the Channel 5 documentary series A Killer Makes a Call.

The show focuses on a variety of cases where the killer contacts the police.

Viewers can catch the episode about Trigg when it airs on March 4, 2025, at 10pm.
