INMATES at a run-down jail have been given a seven-minute time limit for the loo — and are struggling to beat the clock.
The rule aims to cut huge queues that build up as many of its cells have no toilets.
It was introduced as a temporary measure at HMP Isle of Wight but has since become permanent.
A source revealed many lags at the Category B jail struggled to do their business in the time allocated.
They said: “When prisoners are old, or have mobility issues, and they need to use the toilet and have a wash, brush their teeth or something else, that time goes by very quickly.”
The prison, also known as HMP Albany, opened in 1967.
Ex-inmates include Moors murderer Ian Brady.
It is now seen as a liability because of how derelict some wings have become.
Lags are allowed a maximum of five trips to the bathroom each night if they do not have an en-suite loo, like most other cells across the country.
They must use an electronic keypad to access the facilities, so guards know who is going and when.
Officers are said to consider exemptions on a case-by-case basis.
Muslim inmates are allowed 12 minutes in the bathroom to perform washing rituals during Ramadan.
Justice minister Sir Nic Dakin said: “It is correct the in-cell facilities at HMP Isle of Wight are not on a par with newer-built prisons.
“This does mean that some cells on the Albany site do not have any in-cell toiletry or washing facilities.
“However, alternative provisions are provided.
“Feedback from prisoners on these facilities is always welcomed.”
