Galopin Des Champs had been going for an incredible hat-trick, only to be denied by Inothewayurthinkin’s brilliant run.

After the race, JP McManus‘ victorious horse was seen to by veterinary staff.

With Walsh still aboard, a vet checking on Inothewayurthinkin’s back legs was sent flying by a brutal kick.

The vet thankfully did not appear to be seriously hurt.

After his horse’s victory, McManus admitted that he will consult trainer Gavin Cromwell before making a decision on whether he will compete in the Grand National at Aintree on April 5.

He said: “We have to be fair to the horse. The Gold Cup is a tough race.

“I’ll see what Gavin says but don’t expect a decision in the next week.”

On today’s triumph, Cromwell added: “Galopin Des Champs was a dual Gold Cup winner, but we were coming here to try and win the race.

Everyone was shocked by the quick kick

“We weren’t coming to pick up the pieces and get place money.”

On the National, he added: “I think we’ll all catch our breath and get the horse home, and we’ll be having the conversation later on, but I suppose you certainly can’t rule it out and it is tempting. It’s certainly something to think about.”

Unfortunately, today’s Gold Cup was a bittersweet one for McManus.

While Inothewayurthinkin produced an amazing upset win, the Irishman’s other runner Corbetts Cross tragically died after suffering fatal injuries in a fall.

A Cheltenham statement read: “In our fifth race of the day, Corbett’s Cross was immediately attended to by our veterinary professionals, but sadly sustained a fatal injury.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”
