With key names such as James Lowe and Mack Hansen out vs France, the Men in Green were subject to a demolition job by Les Blues in Dublin, blowing the Six Nations title race wide open.
The free scoring French now lead the tournament, with Ireland going from aiming for a Grand Slam to third place in the space of one weekend.
The Italians will have motivation themselves, trying to avoid winning the Wooden Spoon for the 19th time in their history.
