Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been brought in as a consultant.
And the Dutchman wants to hire Van der Gaag as Steijn’s replacement, according to the Daily Mail.
However Ajax could struggle to lure Van der Gaag back to Holland due to his importance to Ten Hag.
The pair previously worked together at Ajax while Ten Hag was in charge of the Dutch giants.
He even promoted the 52-year-old from Under-21s boss to assistant manager.
It is understood Van der Gaag would have to push to leave, and that scenario is thought unlikely.
Ten Hag and Van der Gaag won the Eredivisie with Ajax in 2022 before turning around United’s fortunes to win the Carabao Cup.
The Red Devils also got back into the Champions League under their stewardship but this season has not got off to a good start.
