It has introduced Size 9 Baby Dry Nappy Pants — for those weighing around 3st, close to the average for a five-year-old.

Parents of children with additional needs and disabilities welcomed the move.

But research has also revealed around half of modern parents in the UK do not believe potty training is solely their responsibility.

Morrisons said it was selling Size 9 Pampers “to help children with disabilities or special needs and also a recognition that some older children still need nappies.”

Tesco introduced them “in response to customer demand”.

But Felicity Gillespie, director of early child development charity Kindred Squared, said: “Medical experts are clear that the time for children, with no additional medical needs, to be coming out of nappies is between 18 and 30 months.”

A spokesman for size 9 Pampers stockist Morrisons said: “We were the first to introduce these earlier this year.

“They have been introduced to help children with disabilities or special needs and also a recognition that some older children still need nappies.”

Pampers was contacted for comment.
