NOTHING beats the feeling of slipping into a bed with fresh sheets – but what about the duvet beneath it?

With a bedsheet covering it, you would be forgiven for thinking your duvet isn’t exposed to dirt or dust.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that cleaning fans have been left divided over how often you should be washing your duvet.

A mum sparked the fierce debate on social media after asking: “How often does everyone wash their duvets?”

Some people appear to be meticulous about it as one said: “I wash my duvet every week.”

Another echoed: “In the washing machine once a week.”

While a third added: “Fortnightly. Dead skin cells, you sweat at night. Yuck.”

Others wait slightly longer, using the change in season as their guide to get the duvet in the washing machine.

“I have a summer and winter duvet, they both get washed in changeover once a year each”, said one person.

A second agreed: “I wash them all when I change over so when winter ones go away I wash them ready for summer ones and vice versa. I just shove them in the washing machine on a wool wash.”

And a third wrote: “I wash mine once a year. Luckily the summer one fits in my 8kg washing machine. The thicker one goes to the laundrette, cost me 12 quid plus £3 to tumble dry on their massive Mac shine.

“They smell lush and I had them for 18 years. Bought good quality and still going strong.”

But many admitted their duvet has never seen the inside of a washing machine.

“Good heavens, sometimes I don’t know how I am still alive with all this mega hygiene”, fumed one.

“I never wash mine, there is only me sleep under it and obviously have a cover that gets washed. oh and a top sheet.”

A second chimed in: “Same, you can be too clean! Then you get every germ going.”

A third echoed: “I’m so glad you said that. I’ve never washed my down duvet, obviously wash the covers though.”

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “Never washed it lol.”

Some took it a step further, revealing that they buy a new duvet every time they feel like they need one.

One said: “I don’t wash mine, i just replace after the seasons finished. Pillows renew every 12 weeks.”

While a second wrote: “I never wash mine. Always get rid and buy a new one”

But they faced immediate backlash as another cleaning fan insisted: “A practical but not very sustainable solution.”

Elsewhere, a doctor has revealed how often you should be washing your bedding – and it’s bad news if you hate laundry.

The hassle of stripping everything off then washing and drying it all might mean you wait a little too long to change your bed sheets.

But according to Doctor Jason Singh, anything less than once a week is pretty gross.

And everyone’s saying the same thing after a mum revealed how often she washes her bra.
