She says her newborn suffered an infection after she found his cot riddled with droppings at their flat in Birmingham, West Midlands.

And she told how mice are even crawling across the family while they sleep.

The 30-year-old, who didn’t want to be named, said the place has been infested with the rodents since she moved in with her 12-year-old daughter at the beginning of this year.

Birmingham City Council’s pest control teams have tried tackling the problem – but she insists it’s only “getting worse”.

She told BirminghamLive her mental health was “deteriorating” due to the grim conditions at the apartment in the city’s Kitts Green district.

She described a mouse climbing over her sleeping daughter, adding: “Mice have been in my bedroom and we can hear them behind the walls.

“The whole block is riddled – pest control have been around and put traps down and covered a few holes, but they keep coming back.”

She said she was “desperate” to be rehomed, especially after her baby son fell ill – and told of having to throw away his possessions, “including his cot after I found mice droppings inside”.

The council said it was “deeply sorry” to hear of the family’s suffering.

A spokesperson said three mouse bait boxes were installed in July and checked again a fortnight later, but contractors were unable to gain access or contact the mum when making follow-up visits.

Work to block up holes was now “completed but took longer than expected”, they added – while promising to do “everything in our power to make their home safe and comfortable again”.

The spokesperson said: “We’re deeply sorry to hear that this infestation is causing such distress to the family.”

Meanwhile, a report last month warned working from home could be contributing to a surge in Britain’s rat population.

Pest control experts have warned about commonly-used attempted hacks to get rid of rodents they say never work.

But cheap and simple tricks which can help have been suggested.
