And now the Spaniard has broken his silence on the matter with a post on X, formerly Twitter.
De Gea took to the social media platform to simply post a single inquisitive emoji leaving fans wondering about his return.
Man Utd are considering asking their former keeper to return amid concerns over squad depth when Andre Onana heads to the African Cup of Nations in January.
Onana was brought in this summer by Erik ten Hag and Co for £47m while De Gea was released following 12 years at Old Trafford.
But the Manchester giants were caught off guard by the Cameroon No1’s decision to come out of international retirement and are now assessing their options.
United have already bought Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for £4.3m but Tom Heaton would be the only other stopper at the club during the Afcon tournament.
De Gea has been training privately since his contract with the 13-time Premier League champions expired.
But he has been unable to land himself a new home despite reports of interest from all round Europe.

talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has pleaded with De Gea not to go back to United, after “what they have done to him”.
De Gea was desperate to stay at Old Trafford and agreed to almost HALF his £375,000-a-week salary.
But United shunned him as they took that offer off the table, and even asked not to join another team until Onana signed.
If he was to make the sensational U-turn to his former employers then he wouldn’t be the first to make a shock return this season.
Jonny Evans already re-signed for the Man Utd after spending nine years with the club between 2006 and 2015.
De Gea will still have big gloves to fill if he comes in to replace Onana while the Afcon tournament is underway.
The 27-year-old was the hero on Tuesday night with an injury-time penalty save that helped United to a 1-0 Champions League win over Copenhagen.
