A MAJOR motorway has been closed in both directions after a horror crash sparked delays for thousands of drivers.

The M4 on the Prince of Wales Bridge was closed to traffic this evening after a serious road traffic accident.

Disruption has affected traffic in both directions from junction 22 on the M49 to junction 23 on the M48.

The road was closed in both directions with commuters heading home severely affected.

Multiple emergency services are at the scene, including police from both sides of the border and an air ambulance.

Drivers have been urged to follow a diversion via the M48 Severn Bridge.

However, Gwent Police have since confirmed that officers have now reopened Junction 22 – 23 in both directions on the Prince of Wales Bridge.

A post on the National Highways website earlier this evening read: “The M4 in South Gloucestershire/Monmouthshire is closed between J21 and J23 (Prince of Wales Bridge) due to a serious incident.

“Avon & Somerset Police and Gwent Police are on scene.

“Great Western Air Ambulance are also attending.”

A spokesperson for Gwent Police previously said: “Emergency services are dealing with a road traffic collision on the M4 between Junction 22 and Junction 23 on the Prince of Wales bridge.

“The road is closed in both directions.”
