She is seeking an economic pact with the US that would get rid of the tariffs imposed on Britain by the President this month.
And she appeared to back proposed 145 per cent tariffs on Beijing.
She added: “I understand concerns the US has about imbalances, particularly when it comes to China that runs persistent trade surpluses, including with the UK.”
Ms Reeves wants to reduce America’s general ten per cent tariff and 25 per cent on British cars, steel and aluminium.
She will meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at the IMF today.
She said: “We don’t always agree with the policy prescriptions and we’re seeking a deal that reduces the trade barriers between our countries,”
“But I am confident that a deal can be done, that our strong relationship when it comes to defence, when it comes to security and when it comes to the economy and prosperity, means that we can strike a deal.”
The White House says dozens of countries are queuing up to sign trade deals with America after Trump’s reciprocal tariffs blizzard.
