Customers were met by signs telling them the store would only be open for lunch due to staffing issues

The shop in Caterham, Surrey, opened from 12.30pm to 2pm on Tuesday.

Tile fitter George Catten, 52, moaned: “I normally pop in for breakfast so I was gutted when I read the signage.

“I just laughed. Imagine a Greggs that only opens for 90 minutes!

“They are always putting up signs saying they are not opening or closing early but this takes the biscuit.

“They’re a bit of a laughing stock locally.”

Admin worker Maggie Moclaire, 39, added: “During the summer they had signs up saying they would not be open if there was a bus strike as the staff couldn’t get to work.

“You might not be able to get a sausage roll but you have to admit, at least they have a sense of humour.”

Sun Squeeze Team member and consumer champion Martyn James said: “It seems a bit absurd.

“Let’s hope they find some workers soon.

“The last thing the country needs is a shortage of Greggs sausage rolls.

“They are a British institution.”

Greggs said: “Our Caterham shop has been impacted by staffing availability in recent days.

“We hope to return to normal trading hours in the coming days.”
