McTominay, 28, has not looked back since the move and has become a firm fan favourite in Naples.

The midfielder has already racked up 11 goals and four assists in his 31 Serie A outings.

The former Red Devil’s impressive performances have helped the club reach the summit of the league.

Napoli are three points clear of Inter Milan following their 1-0 win over Lecce on Saturday.

McTominay’s impact has sorely been missed this season in Manchester with the club languishing in the bottom half of the table.

And former manager Solskjaer has admitted he can not understand the reasoning behind the midfielder’s exit.

He told BBC Sport: “How you can sell Scott is beyond me.

“Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100 per cent.

“Absolutely nailed on.”

McTominay will be aiming for glory this season with Napoli the favourites for the title with just three games to go.

All three of the club’s games are against bottom-half teams, with Genoa up first before Parma and Cagliari.

He came through the academy at Manchester United and made 255 appearances for the club.

He scored 29 times and assisted eight goals during his seven-year spell in the first team.

He was a part of the team that won the FA Cup and League Cup under manager Erik ten Hag.

The Napoli fans have fallen in love with the Scotsman with one even getting a tattoo in his honour.

However, he could be set to lose millions after loaning cash to a collapsed investment company that was run by his Wag Cam Reading and her dad.
