RORY MCILROY showed his class after missing out on winning yet another PGA Tour event at the Truist Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy finished T7 at Philadelphia Cricket Club as he got in his final preparations for this week’s PGA Championship.

The Northern Irishman, who finally ended his wait for a career Grand Slam in April, shot a final round 68 to end the weekend 10-under par.

And despite not managing to earn an incredible fourth PGA Tour win of the season, McIlroy was still in good spirits as he cheered on good pal Shane Lowry.

Lowry, 38, was in contention to win the tournament right until the 18th and McIlroy made sure to watch his pal from the clubhouse.

Unfortunately for Lowry, he was unable to get over the line and ultimately finished T2 – losing out to Sepp Straka.

McIlroy looked gutted when compatriot Lowry didn’t manage the victory, slumping back in his chair with his head in his hands on CBS’ behind-the-scenes footage.

But that didn’t stop him from making sure he showed his class again by heading back out onto the course to congratulate Ryder Cup teammate Straka on his victory afterwards.

Straka wound up winning by two shots, preventing Lowry from a first solo PGA Tour win since his Open Championship success back in 2019.

Despite not getting back in the winner’s circle, Lowry did break into the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time ahead of the PGA Championship – as well as earning over £1.6MILLION in prize money.

Childhood pal McIlroy said after the Truist Championship that he has seen Lowry’s game improve since his move to the States.

He said: “I’ve seen a big difference in Shane since he started living here full-time.

“We practice and play together so much at home. Just the back and forth from Ireland is tough. Even this time of the year, it’s still hard to practice over there.

“I just feel like I’ve seen such a big improvement in his consistency week to week because of where he lives, being able to practice in great conditions on great golf courses, get in games with the likes of myself or Rickie or JT or whoever lives down in Jupiter.

“It’s been amazing as his friend to see him play so well and so consistently.”

Both Lowry and McIlroy will tee it up at Quail Hollow on Thursday in a bid to take home the second major of the season.
