It is understood the youngster is now at home recovering with a broken leg.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a child on Station Road, Great Coates, shortly after 3.30pm on Friday (9 May).

“It is reported that a child attempted to cross the road when they were involved in a collision with a black Honda traveling along Station Road.

“Emergency services attended the scene, and the child was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries to his leg.”

The nursery school’s head, Sarah Bate, thanked the school staff for their help and said the school is working towards preventing future incidents.

In a statement, Great Coates Village Nursery School said: “On Friday at the end of the school day, a child leaving our nursery was sadly involved in a road traffic accident.

The child, who had just been collected by a parent, we understand, sadly stepped into oncoming traffic and was hit by a driver.

“We are in touch with the parent of the child and understand they are now recovering at home with a broken leg.

“This incident has impacted all staff at the school and it could have easily been much worse if the driver was speeding.

“We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who stopped and helped at the scene and helped.

“We as a setting are  committed to work with our local ward councillors to look at measures to prevent this ever happening to anyone outside our school again.

“Whilst we cant control what happens when children leave our nursery, we can look at ways to make the road crossing safer, and work with parents and residents of the village and North East Lincolnshire Council to make this happen.”
