A MAJOR crash has caused a huge oil spill sparking severe delays on the M6 and M65.

Part of the M6 northbound near junction 32 for the M55 in Preston has been closed following the collision.

The crash took place overnight, causing a fuel spillage and major disruption on both motorways.

National Highways said Lancashire Road Police and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service are at the scene.

Thousands of drivers are expected to face long queues as a clean-up operation takes place.

Lancashire Police said: “We need to inform you that the M6 northbound is currently closed due to a traffic collision.

“We are hoping to get lanes one and two open again soon, but for now please plan alternative routes and avoid the area.”

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M65 in Lancashire is closed westbound between J3 (Riley Green) and J2 (M61 Junction, near Brindle) due to a road traffic collision which was reported to National Highways this morning.

“Once units got to scene, it was reported that a large fuel spillage had crossed the carriageway following the collision which required an extensive clear up.

“Clear up works have since been complete, and service providers remain on scene to assess the carriageway before re-opening.”

Drivers have been urged to divert or plan ahead to avoid heavy traffic.
