Aston Villa vs Tottenham preview

With Liverpool the only side assured of a top-five finish, the race for Champions League qualification remains wide open – and unexpectedly gripping.

No fewer than six teams are still in contention for the remaining four places, with Aston Villa bang in the mix.

Unai Emery’s men welcome Tottenham to Villa Park on Friday night, buoyed by their recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, which secured European football for next season.

But the Villans aren’t interested in Thursday night action – they want an immediate return to the Champions League.

Villa currently sit sixth in the table, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and one point ahead of Nottingham Forest.

With just two matches remaining, their destiny isn’t entirely in their own hands, but a maximum six-point haul could see them leapfrog Chelsea – who still have tough fixtures against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

So Villa do look well-positioned to take care of their own business, and heap pressure on their rivals.

They’ve won four of their last five league games and are flying at home, with seven straight wins in all competitions at Villa Park.

They’ve scored 17 goals during that run and registered three clean sheets. They also defeated Spurs in the Carabao Cup on home soil earlier this season.

However, only against Manchester City (12) have Tottenham won more Premier League away games than they have against Aston Villa (11), with Spurs winning eight of their last nine at Villa Park (L1).

Tottenham, by contrast, clearly have their sights set firmly on their upcoming Europa League final against Manchester United.

Last week’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace marked their 20th Premier League loss of the season – their highest tally in a single campaign since the old First Division days of 1991-92. Only the relegated trio of Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton sit below them in the table.

It was also their 24th defeat across all competitions this season – one short of their all-time record – and Ange Postecoglou’s decision to make eight changes only further demonstrates that he has one objective in mind.

While Spurs did the double over Villa last season, their current form on the road makes this a daunting trip. They’ve lost four of their last five away league games and may struggle to contain a confident, motivated Villa side.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham preview betting tips and predictions

Win to Nil

Aston Villa are in sensational form.

Since the start of March, only Newcastle have earned more points in the Premier League than Aston Villa, with the Villans winning seven of their eight matches in that time – including FIVE clean sheets.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (D2 L7), beating bottom side Southampton 3-1 in April.

They’ve also conceded in each of their last 11 league games, their longest run without a clean sheet since a run of 17 in 2010. That plus heavy rotation should see the hosts claim maximum points.

Goalscorer

Talisman Ollie Watkins scored his 75th Premier League goal last time out against Bournemouth, becoming Aston Villa’s highest goalscorer in the Premier League.

He’s looking to score 10 home goals in the same top-flight season for the first time. Watkins has three goals in his last seven appearances, while nobody in the squad has even half his xG for the campaign – ranking top for big chances in Villa’s last four home matches.
