ALAN SHEARER suggested Ruben Amorim may be sacked after Manchester United’s “embarrassing” Europa League heartbreak.

United saw their Champions League hopes go up in flames after losing 1-0 to Tottenham on Wednesday’s final at San Mames following an uninspiring performance.

Ruben Amorim may be sacked after Manchester United’s “embarrassing” Europa League heartbreak

Alan Shearer believes Man Utd are ‘so much worse’ now under Amorim

Man Utd are now set for their worst ever Premier League finish as well as a 2025-26 campaign without European football and that has raised questions regarding Amorim‘s future at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese tactician sensationally claimed he would walk away with no pay-off if the Red Devils’ board and fans decide his time is up.

However, the 40-year-old still has support from the powers that be and is expected to rebuild with a massive squad overhaul despite missing out on a £100million windfall.

Nevertheless, Shearer, 54, wouldn’t be surprised if the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss was let go.

The Premier League’s record goalscorer insists the Manchester giants are “so much worse” now under Amorim than what they were before his arrival in November.

United were seven points off a Champions League spot when the Portuguese boss took over but now are a remarkable TWENTY SEVEN points off fifth spot.

Shearer told Betfair: “There will be a lot of questions around Ruben Amorim’s future now and very much like the Spurs situation, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t the manager at the beginning of the season. Whether that’s his choice or not, I guess.

“I’ve said it so many times, there’s no way he’s gone into that football club and expected what he found.

“There’s no way he thought it was that bad. He couldn’t have, because I’m not sure you’d go.

“He hasn’t helped the situation. They’ve actually got so much worse under him.

“It might have been papering over the cracks if they had won the Europa League, but their problems were summed up in that 97 minutes: no creativity, no legs, no energy, no goals, and a complete mess.”

Shearer didn’t hold back when discussing United’s overall performance in the Europa League Final.

The Newcastle legend dubbed Man Utd’s display as an “embarrassment” that exposed how all their transfer money was wasted.

Shearer added: “Manchester United were relying on a centre-half, with long balls into the box in the last 15 or 20 minutes of the game, and that sort of sums up who and what they’ve come to.

“It’s a pretty embarrassing situation when you’re looking to a centre-half to rescue you, as he did in the semi-final and a couple of times by playing in that centre-forward position.

“That’s who and what Man United have come to now. That’s the embarrassing thing; the money they’ve spent, especially on strikers, yet they’re chucking a centre-half up front for the last 15 minutes of the game and launching long balls up to him. That’s how bad Man United are.”

Man Utd ratings: Diallo best player in Europa League final but Hojlund out of his depth

AMAD DIALLO’S fizzing first-half display was little consolation for Manchester United in a dismal 1-0 Europa League final loss to Tottenham.

Rasmus Hojlund’s plight up front continued in one of the worst European showpieces for many years – as both sides showed why they will finish in the Premier League lower reaches.

Spurs clinched it from virtually their first opportunity – on 42 minutes.

Brennan Johnson bundled in Pape Sarr’s inswinging cross, with United left-back Luke Shaw also getting a touch on the way.

The Red Devils dictated possession more and more after the break, with Leny Yoro stretching to test Guglielmo Vicario from a free-kick.

But United’s chances only arrived regularly in the final quarter of a patchy contest.

The Red Devils belatedly piled on the pressure in the seven minutes of stoppage time, but Spurs just held on.
