HUMAN remains have washed up on a UK beach in front of a stunned walker – with a “leg” reportedly seen on the shore.

The grisly discovery was made at Westward Ho! beach in Bideford, North Devon, on Thursday morning.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at around 9.30am after reports of body parts on the sand.

One witness described the sight as “very graphic”.

Police officers and a private ambulance were pictured at the beach, and it’s understood images of the remains were shared online before being removed.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the remains were taken to a mortuary and will be examined further.

The force said: “We were notified at around 9.30am on Thursday 22 May following reports of what appeared to be human remains found at the end of Westward Ho! Beach, Bideford.

Officers attended and have removed the remains to the mortuary for further examination.”

Locals were left shaken by the disturbing discovery, with the beach, popular among dog walkers and tourists, cordoned off as police carried out their investigation.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the remains belong to a man or a woman, or how long they may have been in the water.

A source told Devon Live that the body part was clearly visible. “It looked like a leg,” the witness claimed.

“It was very graphic and shocking to see something like that just lying on the beach. I couldn’t believe it.”

Police have not yet made any links to missing persons and are expected to work alongside the coroner to establish the identity.

The discovery is the latest in a series of similar incidents across UK shores.

In April last year, a family made a chilling find while fossil hunting at Cove Road Beach in Silverdale, Lancashire.

Jenny, 50, her husband Mick, 52, and their 10-year-old twins stumbled across a human skull lodged between rocks near Morecambe Bay.

Initially believing the bones were animal remains, Jenny’s son quickly realised something was wrong.

“That doesn’t look like an animal or a rock,” he told her.

Lancashire Police confirmed the bones were human and said they believe they had been in the sea for some time.

The investigation is ongoing, with officers working closely with HM Coroner.

Police in Devon are urging anyone with information about the latest incident at Westward Ho! to come forward.

Officers are expected to carry out further searches in the area over the coming days.
