A bag check had been set up by police outside the school

The 31-year-old was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

The student, who is just 14 years old according to BFMTV, was taken into custody at the Nogent gendarmerie.

They attacked the staff member during a routine bag check which had been set up by police in front of the school.

The attacker is understood to have been a student at the school.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the stabbing a “senseless surge of violence”, BFMTV reported.

Meanwhile, National Rally leader Marine Le Pen sent her thoughts to the family of the slain teaching assistant and said: “Not a week goes by without a tragedy striking a school”.

A spokesperson for the Haute-Marne prefecture told BFMTV: “The attacker was neutralized by the police officers present at the scene.”

A police officer’s hand was also reportedly injured during the arrest due to the student’s blade.

It is currently unclear what his motives were.

The school, which has 324 students, was also plunged into lockdown.

Random bag searches were authorised in March in order to combat growing violence in schools.

They were implemented after a series of school attacks, including the death of a 17-year-old high school student in Essonne.

According to the Ministry of National Education in France, 94 bladed weapons have been seized from 958 school bag checks.

France’s Education Minister Elisabeth Borne announced on X that she would attend the scene of the crime.

She expressed “support for the victim and her loved ones”.

The minister said: “I salute the composure and commitment of those who acted to restrain the attacker and protect the students and staff.

“I am going to the scene in support of the entire school community and law enforcement.”

In April, a schoolgirl was stabbed to death by a 15-year-old student who went on a knife rampage before being tackled to the ground by teachers in France.

The attacker, wearing black clothing and a balaclava, also stabbed three other students who were rushed to hospital.

The deadly attack unfolded at the Nantes private school Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides.
