England’s Under-21s remain firmly on course to defend their European Championship crown after a terrific 3-1 quarter-final victory over Spain.

Goals from James McAtee, Harvey Elliott, and Elliot Anderson sealed a statement win for Lee Carsley’s side, who had looked far from convincing during the group stage.

But the Young Lions found their rhythm at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho on Saturday, producing their best performance of the tournament when it mattered most.

The result has installed England as favourites to lift the trophy once again, with confidence high heading into Wednesday’s semi-final clash against the Netherlands in Bratislava.

A fiery conclusion to the Spain match saw tempers flare and a mass brawl unfold after the final whistle – prompting Carsley to quip there were “better ways to build camaraderie.”

Still, the scuffle underlined the grit and fight within this England squad as they look to retain their title.

The Dutch, however, promise to be stern opposition. While they too were underwhelming in the group stage – registering just one win from three – they demonstrated impressive resilience in their quarter-final win over Portugal, holding on for a 1-0 victory despite going down to 10 men after just 21 minutes.

If past meetings are anything to go by, this encounter will be tight.

Five of the last six meetings between these sides since 2007 have ended in draws after 90 minutes – including a 1-1 stalemate in their most recent clash in November 2024.

Low scoring

I don’t anticipate a high-scoring affair on Wednesday, despite the attacking talent on both sides.

As noted, five of the last six encounters between these nations have ended in draws, with only one featuring more than 2.5 goals.

England, despite their 3-1 win in the quarter-finals, have been wasteful in front of goal throughout the tournament (66 shots and just 17 on target). Meanwhile, the Netherlands come into this match with back-to-back clean sheets and four shutouts in their last six games.
