Police were called to Coventry Street at 12:04am, and assisted with closing the road and evacuating the occupants of the 14 houses.

Five fire crews also attended the scene, along with the technical rescue and command unit.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Crews used large jets and an aerial ladder to extinguish the fire.

They added: “Three people were taken to hospital.”

Two of the people from one of the properties were seriously injured, and a third from another property received treatment for minor injuries.

“The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.”

The explosion is not thought to be related to a gas network fault.

Their engineers attended the scene at 12:30am and have been working alongside emergency services to determine the cause of the explosion.
