BARCELONA will send Lionel Messi a payment on Monday to finally clear the financial debt the club owe him.

The La Liga giants still owed the legend money from his final contract at the Camp Nou, which ended in 2021.

Messi has gone on to star for Paris Saint-Germain and now plays for Inter Miami – and will be in action tonight against his old club at the Club World Cup.

But according to Culemania, via AS, the 38-year-old will receive a payment of just over £5million, or €5.95m, tomorrow.

The June 30 payment will mark the end of an agreement between Messi and the club struck while he was still on the books in Spain.

Barcelona were hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis and were left in near-financial ruin as a result.

As a result, they made an agreement with Messi to defer the payment of his contract.

That value totalled a sum of almost £41m (€47.6m).

A report from Sport added that Barcelona had duly fulfilled all their commitments to date.

The Argentine is not the only player who this agreement applied to, with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba – both now starring alongside Messi in Florida – also taking up similar offers.

Busquets will be paid just over £1m (€1.18m) while Alba will be receiving £806,000 (€944,000).

June 30 will also see Barcelona clearing debts from six other former players, including the likes of expensive flops Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho.

The total outlay for deferred payments coming out on Monday equals around £13.7m (€16m).

Barca will be paying Samuel Umtiti £1m (1.2m), Griezmann £824,000 (€965,000), Coutinho £730,000 (€855,00), Ousmane Dembele £550,000 (€644,000), Miralem Pjanic £550,000 (€644,000) and Sergi Roberto £477,000 (€599,000).

Some stars still at Barcelona from the time also have similar deals in place, including Ronald Araújo, Pedri, Ansu Fati and Iñaki Peña, though these amounts are less than the three club legends were owed.

Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen did not agree to a deferred salary but did accept a renewal to stagger out payments more.
