The Kop club’s statement followed a similarly heartbreaking one from the Portuguese FA.
It read: “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain.
“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 internationalizations for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.
“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, lined up the players.
“The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute’s silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women’s European Championship, lost to two champs.
“The disappearance of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honour their legacy.”
Jota’s passing was made even more tragic by the fact that he just got married late last month.
The Portugal ace tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Rute Cardoso in a beautiful ceremony ten days ago.

A Liverpool FC statement
The late Jota couldn’t have been any prouder to have wed the love of his life, sharing a heartwarming post of their big day to his Instagram in what would be his final post.
In the caption, the couple said: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
Jota began his career in his homeland with Pacos de Ferreira before a 2015 move to Atletico Madrid, for whom he failed to make an appearance.
He caught the eye of then-Championship side Wolves in the summer of 2017 following an impressive loan spell with Porto.
Jota flourished in the Black Country and helped guide Wolves back to the Premier League with 18 goals in his first season in England.
He’d score a further 26 times for the club before a 2020 move to Anfield.
Jota won every domestic trophy going during his time with the Reds, scoring 65 goals in 185 appearances before his tragic passing.
