Settle the debt

BRITAIN’S debt mountain should make sobering reading for those Labour MPs who think more spending is the answer to everything.

If the Government carries on with its current head-in-the-sand approach to reforming the State, UK debt will climb above 270 per cent of GDP by the early 2070s.

And if growth remains weak at 0.5 per cent under the burden of super-high taxes, that would turn into an unimaginable 647 per cent of our total output.

Yet still some public spending plans remain totally out of control.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s Net Zero targets alone will cost an eye-watering £803BILLION by 2050.

Welfare and pensions are another time-bomb waiting to blow up public finances.

At the same time, we are still paying for 2007’s credit crunch, Covid and the energy shocks caused by the war in Ukraine.

Borrowing our way out of trouble is unsustainable and all the warning lights on the Chancellor’s dashboard are flashing red.

Britain is on a frightening path but it’s NOT too late to change course.

Ditching absurd green targets, slashing waste and boosting growth with tax cuts could still save us from disaster.

Mac the knife

HOW galling to see Britain roll out the red carpet for Emmanuel Macron.

For years, the French President did everything he could to thwart Britain’s desire for Brexit.

He has also abjectly failed in his promise to help stop the boats — despite UK tax-payers handing France £771million.

Macron demanded a sellout of our fishing fleet as the price of Keir Starmer’s Brexit reset deal with the EU.

And he has undermined our support of Ukraine by trying to negotiate his own failed peace deal with murderous tyrant Vladimir Putin.

The only question is: What French farce does he have planned next?

Court out

THE sweeping reforms to our criminal justice system set out by a top judge yesterday seem interested only in keeping criminals OUT of prison.

How do Lord Leveson’s recommendations for more “Out of Court Resolutions” and more police cautions for lower tier crimes help tackle the epidemic of shoplifting and drugs offences?

What about the victims?

Yes, the courts are clogged up with cases unacceptably delayed for years.

But is the answer really to punish FEWER criminals rather than come up with wider reforms to the system itself?
