A REFORM MP has said he will not return to the party amid allegations about his business activities during the pandemic.

James McMurdock resigned the whip last week ahead of reports claiming he took out thousands of pounds in Covid loans through two companies – one dormant and the other with no staff.

The South Basildon and East Thurrock MP has now confirmed he will remain an Independent, saying he made the decision after receiving “specialist legal advice”.

He had originally called the suspension a “precautionary measure” to protect Reform UK, but has now cut ties for good.

The Sunday Times reported his firm JAM Financial Ltd took out a £50,000 loan, while Gym Live Health and Fitness Ltd claimed £20,000 – despite both failing to meet loan scheme requirements.

Mr McMurdock insists all his dealings were legal and reviewed by professionals.

Labour accused Nigel Farage of “sitting on his hands” and failing to act, as pressure mounts on Reform over its vetting process.

Chair of the Labour Party Ellie Reeves said: “After these serious allegations surfaced, Nigel Farage sat on his hands. He took no action against James McMurdock and instead outsourced the problem – that’s not leadership.”
